Patio. Place in the Sun

Today you can find a patio next to the house or in the garden, now it is rather a lounge under the open sky. Patio in the modern sense is a paved area to relax in its various manifestations. In good weather, you can have family dinners, sunbathe or just be alone with a book. This can be a modest corner with garden furniture, walled with windy side or terrace with flowerbeds, ponds, pergolas, furniture and permanent decorative lighting.

Patio, as well as any other element of the landscape, should fit well into the overall composition. It is important to choose the place wisely. Usually patio is situated against the back wall of the house, especially when it is planned to be a "green" dining hall. In this case, stone tiled patio becomes a transition between house and garden. But such an arrangement cannot always be considered correct. It’s OK if the back wall of the house faces the South, it’s bright and warm all day long. If the back wall faces the east, you will see the sun in the morning, which is good for a family breakfast. Dinners with friends will be pleasant in the western wall. It is clear that if the back wall of the house faces the north, patio will be a cool area and will suffer from a deficiency of sunlight. And if it’s windy, then this place is not for patio. Finding another place it is also necessary when you want the patio design that doesn’t match with the house. In this case, you can tile the area somewhere in the garden. For example, put it on the sunny side of the pond, especially if family members are passionate supporters sunbathing. Those who prefer privacy can hide the patio in garden nook and even deepen it in the ground. Observers, on the contrary, should situate a patio on the high place so they could admire the scenery. In any case, if you decide to put the patio away from the house, you need to consider the path between them so it’s easy to get in any kind of weather. Despite the desire to find a place in the sun, you need to think about how to protect the patio from the relentless midday rays. In this case it is necessary to look at the trees growing in the area, maybe they will identify the location of the site. Especially if they grow in the dead zones of a garden. Patio gives new life to this place. Thus it is better to avoid overhanging trees with large leaves. Undesirable are lindens that attract insects that feed on sap, causing the entire territory of the courtyard filled with sticky honeydew, making it unpleasant to use. If there are no trees that can cast a saving shadow, then you can create the shaded area, by building an alcove in the patio. By the way, it will protect the area from wind and prying eyes. For the same reason, you can set temporary or permanent panels.

Watch your step!

If you choose artificially aged paving material, the patio will look like an old countryard. When a place is finally found, determining the size of the place comes next. To do this, mark the plot using pegs and strings. And then just imagine that the patio is already built. Walk around it, put a table and chairs to sit, to make sure that the measurements are appropriate. Standard patio is madeof such sizes that allow you to placethe garden furniture for four people and provide easy access to the garden. To comfortably relax, sunbathe and eat it is better to account for about three and a half square meters per person. It is clear that the size of the patio should match the size of the garden. Small patio on a large area is just not suitable just as a large one on a tiny land. Now it remains to determine the material, which will pave the area. If we are dealing with a classic version of the patio near the house, the best material for it is brick or tile -like material of the stacked wall of the house. However, there is one "but": decorative (multicolour) facade brick is often not suitable for paving land plots, so you need to select materialcarefully. You can experiment with remote sites from house. For example, if you pick artificially aged paving material, the patio will look like an old courtyard. Beautiful and durable paving slabs are perfect surface in this case. By the way, thanks to the variety of types, shapes and sizes it is the most popular material for patio. It is quickly put on the sand bed(sand) or on top of the concrete base solution. But it is difficult to tile complex shaped area, it must be sawn and cut, and that means a lot of work. It will be better to make the size of the patio so that it consisted of a series of whole titles. Good alternative to tiles - stones of any size and shape. Sandy base thickness of 50 mm is enough for their stacking, and the solution is not needed at all. But if you are still drawn to irregular forms, pay attention to the concrete paving blocks or gravel - they are more flexible in their work.

Concrete patio can be of any shape. This is a relatively inexpensive material. However, it might look very boring and work on its installation is labor-intensive. But it's good as a basis for the same blocks, and if the concrete is well laid, the surface of patio will serve long. Paving blocks are small enough, do not create problems almost do not need care. But they require careful preparation of the foundation and are difficult to install. Gravel, on the contrary, can be installed very easily and can be set as a single surface when mixing it with some binding agent, e.g., resin. But it is not so easy to use and requires seasonal care, such as weeding and raking. To make patio look brighter you can combine several materials of different color or texture. It is important not to overdo it, more than three options is better not to use. From a technical point of view, to simplify the stacking, it is necessary that these materials are of the same thickness. Enough attention should be paid to color and material. Light coating reflects the sun's rays, dark - absorbs, that is to be heated by itself and sometimes to such an extent that it can “bestow”a serious burn. Having defined the material, make a detailed plan. Draw it as a scheme on paper, with all the features of the place where the future patio will be located. This is done in order to accurately calculate how to get around possible obstacles (eg trees or manhole covers), as necessary consumables, etc. If the site is under the patio inclined, you need not only plan, but also in the context of drawing. It will provide an opportunity to determine the position and speed of retaining walls.
